Surya Namaskaar is a term in Indian Sanskrit. ‘Surya’ meaning Sun and the term all together translating into ‘Giver of Energy.’ The sequence of 12 postures is known to be the oldest exercise in the world that is still being practiced!
Ancient Yogi’s traditionally practiced at sunrise –facing the sun, while chanting mantras with each pose –further enhancing benefits. These benefits include; the loosening of the limbs, activating the 7 Chakras of the body and was a great warm up for the rest of their practices they would undertake that day.
Now, don’t be too alarmed if you are new to this and the chanting doesn’t appeal to you –it’s not a necessary attribute of sun salutations -you will still get the physical benefits without chanting.
The spiritual benefits seem obvious enough but for a modern yogi or newbie what else does it have to offer? Well for starters multiple rounds benefit the cardio vascular system -getting your heart rate pumping. It helps with circulation in the body, improves your digestive and nervous systems, as well, doing it right when you wake up has you starting off your day in a wonderful mood.
Here is a great little chart that I found to help you start. It also tells you the breathing techniques which is very crucial to know.
Once you have finished your first round; practice the 2nd round with the Right leg staying in front this time – thus alternating the leg movement back and forth each round and balancing both sides. Most systems state both these rounds together constitute as a single round.

Self Affirmations have been one of the most life changing habits I have incorporated into my everyday life. It continues to help me get through any situation or event that I encounter. And Why not give yourself credit for being such a gorgeous being inside and out? For some it might seem hard at first. So let’s start with just strictly thinking about your mechanics as a human being -your machine -or body alone is such an incredible mechanic that even the greatest scientists in the world still can’t duplicate!!! Does that not count for anything??? Whether you believe it or not You ARE beautiful and extremely special!!! Do yourself justice and never forget that.
Tip: “There’s an App for that” There are some great reminder Apps out there that I recommend using to help you in your Daily Affirmations. “Tell me later” is a reminder app I use (for the iPhone.) I have set up different reminders to go off throughout the day like; I love you just the way you are, Good morning gorgeous! What are some things you are most grateful at this very moment??, I will always be here for you -you are never alone, You look so Beautiful -did you know that??
It’s a great way to remind you that you are one SEXY AND AWESOME being… and really HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY FORGET THAT??
With that being said, you have my permission to flaunt your greatness and LET THE WHOLE WORLD KNOW ABOUT IT!!.. And hey, why not surround yourself with more awesome people so you all can soak up each others awesomeness!!

Former Iron Man/ Sherlock Holmes actor.. gone Yogi Gangster, Robert Downey Jr. shows off his love for Yoga and speaks about the reaping benefits it brings for his health and well being on the cover of Men’s Fitness Magazine earlier this year. Downey says yoga has changed his life. I know, I know, its not the most recent news but I think we can all still benefit from all this right here. -Talk about being a babe… the only question on my mind now is ..WHEN DOES HIS SHIRT COME OFF??
So I thought I’d quickly take this opportunity to share some of the great benefits of practicing yoga. In no particular order they include;
-the obvious improvement of joint flexibility
-improved sleep habits
-full body detoxification
-messaging the bodies organs
-helps lower blood pressure
-improved hand-eye coordination
-stabilizes autonomic nervous system equilibrium
-your mood improves and subjective well-being increases
-memory, attention and learning efficiency improves
…and the list goes on and on.
